Rainbowimaging LCMX1B Self-Retaining Auto Open Close Lens Cap for Pentax MX-1 Camera (Black)

I received mine with one of the three springs loose. I found that out when I attached the cap to my Pentax MX-1 and turned on the power on and off a few times. Instead of all three doors opening and closing smoothly, one refused to function properly.I had to carefully take the Rainbowimaging cap off from the camera and after taking a close look I noticed that small steel hinge bar that hold the door in proper position had slid off somehow. I realigned the problem door and slid back in the bar back in place and the door was now functioning properly.Very happy now that the cap work as it should be. The original cap require you take it off the camera prior to powering it up. If you forget to take off the cap then the camera refuse to work which means you may miss a photo opportunity.

Though previous reviews read quite favorable, the unit I received was nearly impossible to slip over the lens without scary-hard forces. Since it did not fit or seat easily, I used sandpaper in the inside edge to widen the inside diameter. Now it will properly seat over the lens. The packaging came with a little scratch-off 'seal of authenticity', which makes me wonder if Amazon shipped me a knock-off version?? Once installed, unit works fine. It does add about 1/4" of length to the lens.

My major concerns in buying this were with the quality and fit of the product. This item is of high quality, and has been accurately designed. Its fit and finish are complementary with the MX-1; does not look at all out-of-place. The spring mechanism works great. Have no qualms using it as a almost full-time replacement for the standard lens cap. I was concerned that the petals might extend slightly into a wide-angle photo, but checked this closely and could discern no problems.PROs* Fits external lens barrel very well. Friction fit, but tight enough that I can't ever see it accidentally coming off, yet can still be removed by hand. Have worn in cargo pockets without any slippage.* Door tension seems perfect: opens and closes smoothly, without hampering lens extension.* Does not interfere with zooming or focusing in any way.* Design and finish are complementary with the MX-1.* Workmanship and tolerances are great. Petals quickly open and close without binding, yet it is difficult to see any gaps between the edges when closed (maybe 1/64 inch?). I wouldn't hesitate to use this in almost any environmentCONs* Adds about 1/4 inch to depth of camera. For me, since this isn't a truly pocketable camera, this size increase is not very significant.* Protects lens from a hard, direct blow by an object less well than the standard lens cap. But you would probably have to ram it directly into some hard object to have any problem. Glancing blows, or carrying in a case with other objects should present no problems.* Obviously will not provide as good a rain or dust seal as the standard cap. However, the MX-1 is not advertised as being weather resistant, and I wouldn't normally be using it in harsh environments. Anyway, the tight tolerances on the fit of the petals should help, although I would probably switch to the regular cap in bad weather.Overall, this cap has exceeded my expectations in every way.

nice product but good luck trying to remove it after installation

I cannot add much to what other reviewers have already noted. This is a very well made lens cap that improves greatly on the stock one-piece lens cap. As previously stated, this cap fits snugly on the lens barrel without the need for screws. There is no chance whatever of it detaching accidentally. The blades of this cap move very freely and seem to present very minimal resistance to the opening of the lens. When the cap is closed the face of it is firm against taps or other types of incidental contact. There is sufficient clearance between the blades of the cap and the surface of the lens that ordinary flexing of the blades cannot result in contact with the lens.Cosmetically, this cap is attractive and well-finished. As the photos show, it fits flush with the base of the lens body. If you didn't know better you would likely assume that it was part of the camera as it came from the factory. Very nice product.

Good, tight fit. Smooth operation. Looks great.BUT... it makes the camera too big to fit in my ever-ready case.When I'm shooting a lot, I can put this on and leave the lower half of the case on the camera. But the upper half won't close, so it just has to be left behind.So, just be aware of this limitation.

broke after 3 months

I love this lens cover, makes it so much easier than juggling a removable lens cap. Only downfall, my camera won't fit in my fitted leather case anymore. But well worth it.
