Based on a well-known Polish novel with the same title the movie re-tells a true life story of a group of scouts called ''Szare Szeregi'' (Gray Ranks) during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw and the liberation of one of its members (imprisoned and tortured by the Germans) through a maverick military action in board daylight right under the enemy's nose known ''Action at the Arsenal'' which was the biggest single feat of the sort undertaken by a youth resistance organisation in all of occupied Europe during WWII.

Excellent Polish drama.
I really enjoyed this film due to its superb acting, intense atmosphere and good all-round story-telling. I found it inspiring to view as a lasting memory to those brave Poles who decided to fight against the oppression of the German occupation. The scenes of torture were really well acted, to the extent that the SD officer seemed to be enjoying inflicting pain on the prisoners - an example of the very good acting seen throughout this film. The only problem with the movie was the really inappropriate music in the first 45 mins - as it kind of resembled a bad attempt at early 80s Goth music. For some strange reason the music then switched to what you might call 'traditional' WW2 music. That said, I did like the punky bass-line of the music, albeit in the wrong kind of movie. However, that should not detract from what was a top notch film. If you likedΒ Czas Honoru Days Of Honor Seasons 1-6 [24 DVD ] then you will enjoy this film.

Reasonable Movie but Not the One Advertised
This DVD really requires two reviews - one for the video per se and its marketing, and a second one for the movie. The marketing is a downright lie! This movie has nothing to do with "true events" nor with the "battle of Warsaw". It is made from a novel about some gang activity in Warsaw during the German occupation. The front cover of the video gives away the lie. There is no destruction of buildings and certainly no aeroplanes to be seen any where in the entire movie. I have no idea which movie the marketeers thought they were selling but it certainly was not this movie. I would venture so far as to say that the marketeers either do not care about lying to the potential audience or lie deliberately! And the fact that Amazon does not check what it is selling is also a disgrace. As to the movie itself, the scenes are well set and the acting is good, especially from such a young caste, but the script is awful. The basic concept of rescuing one's friend from the Gestapo is fine but the individual events and the dialogue around them leave alot to be desired. And some of the story is so predictable that the viewer can see events coming four or five minutes in advance. If this is a low budget movie, I do not know, but it is well done. If it was anything other than a low budget movie, it is a waste of money. Before you buy this movie, read many of the reviews and be aware you will not get what is advertised.

Polish true life story of the boys who fought back in WW2
This is based on a true episode during the Nazi occupation of Warsaw in WWII and is from a novel of the same title. The `Szare Szeregi' or Gray Ranks of `The Scouts' as they were known fought with the Home Army and got involved with low key sabotage against the invaders to fight for their country. As the iron fist of the Nazis came down ever harder, the young men decided that pamphlets and flags were not enough and so decided to take up the inevitable armed struggle. This tells of a particular operation in which they set about to free a captured comrade who has been taken by the Germans. Now there are scenes here of torture and up front and personal violence. At one point in the film they say `let the living never lose hope' and that is a perfect phrase to sum up why they fought against impossible odds with a random set of weapons and minimum training. This is a very well made and acted film, it is also genuinely moving in places. Just ignore the cover art on this as ever it is misleading. The makeup is totally excellent and the period detail is spot on too. The original title is `Kamienie na szaniec' or `Stones for the rampart' in reference to them having to be as stones in their defence of their homes. This is as I said a great film and I hope a fitting tribute to these brave young men and indeed women who did the right thing in those dark days of history.

Unrealistic
I have a collection of foreign language films depicting the second world war. This is the worst, and will be going to the charity shop. From the locations you would not know that Warsaw had ever been at war. The actors appear to have just visited Burton's store in the early 1970s and a hairdresser in2010. The subtitles appear to have been translated by Google. All in all this film is too bright, too pristine snd too modern to be believable.

A superb telling of young Polish resistance fighters
Don't let the cheesy cover art deter you from seeing this film. It is a well done, brutal depiction of Polish teens fighting back against the German occupation. The young "Scouts" who the film follows are in conflict somewhat with the Home Army as they seek to strike back at the Nazis with more than just smoke bombs in Movie Houses and leaflets disparaging the Germans. The action is swift, the young actors are appealing and it doesn't shy away from showing the cost of resistance other Poles paid for with mass executions.

If One Direction did war films....
that were set in nazi occupied Warsaw then it would look something like this. Odd first half, nearly gave up. The second part very good and made up for music video weirdness.

COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME - RUBBISH
This is a shame because the Poles have a story to tell, tragic and bloody as it is. On many fronts and over time. Westeplatte 39, although with faults is far superior.Books: Norman Davies 44 Uprising, Red Star White Eagle, The Polish Officer (Fiction), a quick selection, Sikorski / Anders Army, Cassino, the Polish Independent Parachute Brigade, Air Force...lets mention Napoleons Lancers and Marshal Poniatowski at Leipzig.....??With all this out there...a very rich heritage and subject matter...someone produces this Junk....pretty young people running around playing games accompanied by a Guy Ritchie soundtrack.....the German military authority....hated and feared, YES.....but never treated as fools....General Bor (Komorowski) and his soldiers deserve better.Could not even finish it....will send as present to someone else who likes B Movies.
